The Legacy of Kappa Sigma
The Legacy of the Kappa Sigma Chapter
The Kappa Sigma Chapter has a long legacy of Service and Leadership. In 1936 Soror Juliette
Boykin chartered and organized the Kappa Sigma Chapter. She was a dedicated member of
Sigma Gamma Rho who also served as Northern Syntaktes, Director of the South Side
Community Center in Chicago, the Urban League Acting Director and the head of West Side
Center, an organization which she founded. Currently, Kappa Sigma is led by Rev. Tonya
Holloway, founder of the Tonya S. Holloway Learning Center, Pastor of God's Outreach Center of
Deliverance, founding member of the Kappa Omicron chapter (SUNY New Paltz), who also
received Kappa Sigma's Community Service award (1999) and Eta Nu Sigma's Mother of the Year
Award for her service in the Foster Care system and leadership in Sigma. Over the years,
numerous members in New York and beyond were groomed for leadership and service through
the Kappa Sigma Chapter. Many of them have branched off to lead efforts that advance Sigma's
mission locally, regionally and internationally.
In the past seventy one years Kappa Sigma Chapter has regularly provided scholarships and has
been recognized for their service to the community. Most recently, Kappa Sigma Chapter won the
northeast region's coveted 'Hattie Redford' Award for community service as displayed in the
scrapbook competition. In line with the international theme (The Power of Vision: Innovation,
Collaboration and Implementation), Kappa Sigma has implemented a local theme of "Realizing
the Vision: Being, Bonding and Building" in the community. This theme reflects their goal to
consistently execute service endeavors, collaborate and develop relationships in the community
and sustain sisterly ties with fellow Sorors, Greeks, community leaders and affiliates, while
continuing to be active and visible providers of Greater service, Greater Progress in their local
community.
