Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated was founded November 12, 1922 at Butler University in
Indianapolis, Indiana.  The founding members were educators committed to providing "Greater
Service, Greater Progress".  The sorority aim is to enhance the quality of life within the community.  
Public service, leadership development and education of youth are the hallmark of the
organization's programs and activities.  Sigma Gamma Rho addresses civic, educational and
economical concerns that impact society.   Sigma Gamma Rho was founded on the precept of
education and continues to promote and encourage high scholastic attainment.  Sigma Gamma
Rho continues to grow and meet the challenges of the day through Scholarship, Sisterhood and
Service.  Sigma Gamma Rho has a proud history of offering service wherever chapters exist.  
Members (also known as Sorors) allow their light to shine through national and local programs
and through work done with sorority affiliates - Philos and Rhoers.

The Kappa Sigma Chapter was established on July 28, 1936 in New York City by Sorors Juliette
Boykins, Alma Bailey, Alma Jeffries, Eunice Jackson, Clara Coleman Liddle, Beula Simpson
Palmer, Augusta Strong North, Annabel Weston, and Fannie Cauldwell Williams.  Through their
dedication to the Sorority's slogan 'Greater Service, Greater Progress', these ladies paved the way
for the captivating Kappa Sigma Chapter with great leadership and love.  Kappa Sigma continues
to provide service for the sake of community progress.  Kappa Sigma is one of the oldest
continuously active alumnae chapters in the northeast region and continues to strive to be the ever
driving force of progress and change in its community.
